June is...Joint Health Month
Diets can make a huge difference in the active & arthritic dog. This is a field of growing research and the advances we’re seeing are exciting! If your pet is active or if he/she has any signs of arthritis you should consider a joint support diet.
The two strongest diets on the market currently are Hill's Prescription Diet j/d (joint diet) and Royal Canin Mobility Support. Talk to your vet to determine which one is appropriate for your pet.
The above diets contain glucosamine at therapeutic levels, as well as having other effective ingredients. Pet store foods contain glucosamine at preventive, NOT treatment levels. Additional nutraceuticals make these diets very potent.
Regrettably, mobility diets for cats are not yet available. Therefore it’s important to stick with high quality cat foods which have balanced levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
Nutraceuticals
There are several nutraceuticals which can help support the joints of dogs and cats. Nutraceuticals are dietary supplements that help the joints to repair damage, decrease inflammation and/or increase joint fluid formation.
Studies have shown glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM to be helpful to various levels. There are now glucosamine supplements for cats!!
**Ask your veterinarian for a recommendation regarding which product is best for your pet.
Weight Control and Regular Exercise
This cannot be overlooked when you are trying to reduce joint stresses. Active & arthritic pets should not be carrying extra weight! If your pet is carrying extra weight consult your veterinarian regarding a weight loss program.
Strong muscles support the joints. Regular exercise is very beneficial. Non-weight bearing exercises such as swimming are particularly useful. Consult your veterinarian before starting your pet on an exercise program.
Pets don’t need to suffer with sore joints any more than you do!
With proper veterinary care you can reduce stress on your pet’s joints. New diets, supplements, and medications can improve your pet’s mobility.
Working with your veterinarian you can help your pet by…
- Reducing any extra weight your pet may be carrying to better help the joints.
- Getting help with choosing the appropriate diet.
- Choosing appropriate nutraceuticals.
- Determining which, if any, anti-inflammatory is needed.
- Determining if further medical action is required to maximize your pet’s joint health.
Thank You
Blood Donors!
A great big thank you to the many clients who came out to participate in our blood donor screening. We ended up with three universal donors! That’s a good number for a single vet hospital. We collect blood from our donors as the Animal Emergency Clinic of the Fraser Valley needs blood. If you'd like further information on our blood donor program or if you would be interested in participating in the next screening, contact our office. We will try to run a screening once a year to keep our blood donor numbers up and to prevent overusing any particular donor.
Newsletters: Many of you will receive our newsletter by email. This is new to us and we're working on the system. We are hoping to send out a newsletter every couple of months or so. If you'd like your email address removed from the newsletter list or you would like to start receiving the newsletter by email please contact us at [email protected].
Annual physical exam & vaccine reminders by emailNo more waiting for the mail...your pet's reminders will come straight to your inbox!
Approximately 20 reminders get returned to us each month through the mail. Many times the addresses are correct but they failed to be delivered. If your email address has changed or we do not have it on file, please contact us at
[email protected]. You will only receive our newsletter or information regarding your pet(s).
**We will NOT sell or provide your email addresses to anyone. Those who don't have email will continue to receive their reminders through the regular mail system**
**Special Orders**
Are you tired of finding the food you needed was just purchased by someone else? Are there special items you'd like?
We place orders twice weekly (Monday and Thursday). If there is an item you want to ensure is there with your name on it, give us a call and we will gladly order it for you. (We will hold special order items for 2 weeks only!)
Specialty items are ordered on an "as needed" basis to ensure they are as fresh as possible. This applies to items such as glucosamine supplements as well as other products. If you don’t see it on the shelf, it doesn’t mean we won’t bring it in for you! Just ask!
